Линкольном [ Lincoln, Abraham] во время Гражданской войны [ Civil War], в частности, отмены доставления в суд [ writ of habeas corpus]. В 1864 был кандидатом на пост вице-президента США, но демократы, выступавшие за скорейший мир, проиграли на выборах. После войны был сторонником сохранения "гринбеков" [ greenbacks] и т.н. "огайского плана" [Ohio Idea] - предложения обменять некоторые облигации периода войны на бумажные деньги, а не на золото. По этому вопросу резко разошелся с восточными демократами [Eastern Democrats], которые в результате отказались выдвигать его кандидатом от партии на пост президента (1868). В 1879-85 - сенатор от штата Огайо; стал инициатором Закона Пендлтона [ Pendleton Act] (1883). В 1885 президент Г.
